Q. What is Sequential Art?

If you're asking this question we better start at the very beginning.

The term "sequential art" is usually attributed to a man by the name of Scott McCloud. His book Understanding Comics, originally published in 1993 by Kitchen Sink Press (now published by Paradox Press, a division of DC Comics), is an exploration of the medium you and I call comic books. In his book Scott discusses many of the elements that make comic books such a flexible and enjoyable medium, the cornerstone of which is this idea that they are comprised of images arranged in a series that represent a linear (sometimes more than others) idea.

This concept is the very core of the magic of visual storytelling--the single most important thing that makes a comic a success. No, it really don't have anything to do with whether or not Mark Silvestri drew the cover (despite the fact that I dig Mark Silvestri art).

Maybe Scott can help shed some like on this for us with his specific definition:

com·ics (kom'iks) n. plural in form, used with a singular verb. 1. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information an/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer.

While comics are the thing you hold in your hand, it is the "concept" that Scott explored in his book. Thus, it is the concept on which we've named our site--sequential art. Scott summarizes his thoughts below in an excerpted panel from his book. Did I mention you should buy and read this book?

Q. What is Sequential-Art.com?

Simply put, its a place for artists to turn thier piles of art into piles of cash. And, just as importantly, a place for fans to purchase their art.

A lot of folks think that artists selling original sequential art after they've already been paid is sort of like getting tried for the same crime twice--just plain unjust. But, take it from us, knowing the work that goes in a page (anywhere from 12 to 16 hours of work) and how much they get page (anywhere from $50 - $250 per page) its not hard to see why turning piles of art into piles of cash becomes a necessary for these talented artists. Honestly, asking them to do what they do for little more than what you'd make at a local White Castle, well, that's enough justification to me.

With what you see before you, our hidden agenda is to create a central place for professional artists to expose themselves to the world at large. To help them create a secondary income flow that will allow them to keep doing the comic books you love!

Thanks for stopping by and please help support the troops.
